Scamp Grouper

Scamp Grouper is one of the most prized catches on deep-water charter trips in the South Atlantic and Gulf of America. These deep-dwelling grouper are less common than Red or Gag Grouper but are highly sought after for their exceptional eating quality.

Charters find Scamp over deep ledges, rock piles, and wrecks in depths of 120 to 400 feet. Live bait and squid dropped to the bottom near structure are the standard approach. Scamp tend to hold in deeper water than other grouper species, so trips targeting them run farther offshore.

Like all grouper, Scamp fight by diving hard for structure. The battle from deep water adds an extra dimension, as you need to work the fish up through the entire water column. Fish commonly run 3 to 10 pounds, with larger specimens exceeding 15 pounds.

Scamp is considered by many to be the best-eating grouper. The white, delicate flesh has a sweet, buttery flavor that is outstanding prepared simply with butter and lemon. Scamp commands premium prices at restaurants for a reason. If you catch one on a charter, you have landed something truly special.
