Gag Grouper

Gag Grouper is a powerful bottom dweller found throughout the Gulf of America and South Atlantic. These aggressive predators are a top target on charters, offering tackle-testing fights and premium table fare.

Charters target Gag Grouper over hard bottom, rock ledges, and wrecks in depths of 40 to 200 feet. Live pinfish, grunts, and sardines fished near the bottom are the most effective baits. Gag Grouper ambush their prey from structure, so positioning your bait close to the rocks and ledges is critical.

The fight is intense. Like all grouper, Gags make an immediate power dive for the nearest hole or crevice the moment they feel the hook. You need to be ready with the reel in gear and hit them hard to keep their head turned away from structure. Fish in the 8 to 25 pound range are standard, with some exceeding 40 pounds.

Gag Grouper is exceptional at the table. The white, mild flesh is slightly firmer than Red Grouper, with a sweet, clean flavor that is outstanding fried, grilled, or in sandwiches. Gag Grouper has strict seasonal closures to protect spawning aggregations, so check regulations before your trip.
