Cobia

Cobia is one of the most exciting fish you can catch from a charter. These powerful, curious fish cruise near the surface around buoys, rays, and floating debris, and when they commit to a bait, the fight is explosive.

Charters encounter Cobia along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts, typically while fishing nearshore wrecks and reefs in spring and summer. Cobia are often spotted free-swimming near the surface, and quick-thinking anglers who can cast a live bait or jig in front of them are rewarded with a violent strike.

The fight is outstanding. Cobia make long, powerful runs and pull incredibly hard, using their broad body to create maximum resistance. They have impressive stamina and will make multiple runs before tiring. Fish commonly run 20 to 50 pounds, with some exceeding 80 pounds. Landing a big Cobia from a crowded charter deck is a true team effort.

Cobia is a premium table fish with firm, white meat that has a slightly rich flavor. The thick fillets hold up beautifully on the grill, and Cobia makes excellent sashimi when fresh. It is one of those fish that anglers specifically seek out for both the fight and the dinner.
