Black Sea Bass

Black Sea Bass is one of the most popular charter targets along the Atlantic coast from New Jersey to the Carolinas. These stout, aggressive reef fish hit hard and are a blast to catch on light tackle, making them a favorite for anglers of all experience levels.

Charters targeting Black Sea Bass typically anchor or drift over rock piles, wrecks, and artificial reefs in depths of 30 to 120 feet. Squid strips, clams, and cut fish are the go-to baits, dropped right to the bottom where sea bass hold tight to structure. When you find them, the action can be nonstop.

Black Sea Bass are scrappy fighters for their size, pulling hard toward structure and making short, powerful runs. Most fish caught on charters run 1 to 3 pounds, with larger fish exceeding 5 pounds on deeper wrecks. Males develop a distinctive blue hump on their head during spawning season.

At the table, Black Sea Bass is outstanding. The white, flaky meat is mild and sweet, perfect for pan-frying, baking, or making fish tacos. Strict size and bag limits help maintain a healthy population, and most trips produce limits for everyone on board.
