Black Grouper

Black Grouper is one of the largest and most powerful grouper species caught on charters in South Florida and the Keys. These apex reef predators are prized for both their incredible fighting strength and their outstanding flavor.

Charters target Black Grouper over deep reefs, wrecks, and ledges in depths of 60 to 300 feet. Large live baits like blue runners, pinfish, and grunts are the weapon of choice. Black Grouper are ambush feeders that strike fast and dive immediately for structure.

The fight is a war. Black Grouper are among the most powerful fish on the reef, making brutal dives toward the bottom the instant they feel the hook. You need heavy tackle, a fast reel, and quick reflexes to stop a big black before it buries you in the rocks. Fish commonly run 15 to 40 pounds, with giants exceeding 60 pounds.

Black Grouper is a premium eating fish. The white, firm flesh has a sweet, mild flavor that is considered superior to many other grouper species. Blackened, grilled, or fried, Black Grouper commands top prices at fish markets and restaurants for good reason.
